Gear I Recommend

The tools I use every day to make music.

I'm not really a "gear guy," but there are quite a few products and services that I enjoy using and can easily recommend since I enjoy using them in my work. Note: I may earn a small commission if you purchase through these links, at no extra cost to you.

Jamstik

Jamstik makes the only MIDI guitar that I've found worthy to keep around. Not only is it a fully functional, well playing, and great sounding electric guitar, but it also immediately plugs in via USB to act as a MIDI controller, allowing you to play VSTs or synths on your DAW. For people like me, who are bad at keys but enjoy writing with MIDI, it's a total game changer, and super fun to jam on!

Jamstik Standard

Jamstik Standard

I'm jamming on this model, their Standard. Not only is it a high quality guitar, but it has the incredible bonus of instantly tracking MIDI. It comes with custom synth software, loaded with patches and effects, enabling you to craft tones that just aren't normally heard on an electric guitar. It also works seamlessly with your DAW, acting like a plug-and-play MIDI controller.

If you spend a lot of time on your DAW, and already play guitar, this might be the most fun instrument you can introduce into your studio. And even from a workflow perspective, it saves a lot of time for people like me who enjoy doubling their guitar melodies with synths to create big layered sounds.

BandAlert

Skip the Algorithm

BandAlert is a cheap and artist-friendly service I helped create for bands who want to grow and fill those empty seats at their gigs. It bypasses the social media algorithm completely, allowing bands to quickly and easily sign up fans to their list using QR codes or clickable links. Then bands can just directly text their fans about upcoming shows. I started this service because I kept missing out on seeing my favorite local bands. They exclusively advertised their shows on Facebook and Instagram, platforms which I actively avoid. Now, whenever they are playing live, I get a text the day before with all the info I need and rarely miss a performance.

If you're in a band, growing your own fan list should be one of your biggest priorities. We're making it easier, and with the coupon code below, you can get 50% off your first three months of service.

Reason

Reason

I've been using Reason for synths, loops, and MIDI stuff for literally decades. The software has changed a lot since then, but now I still find it supremely helpful for finding and creating new instruments.

It comes preloaded with tons of samples, patches, effects, and synths, which I access as a VST now through my DAW. It can also be used as a standalone DAW too, but I still prefer Ableton as an overall mixing/recording environment.

Melodyne

Melodyne

Melodyne is the more graceful version of "AutoTune." It allows you to delicately change vocal performances after they're recorded and fix any sour notes. The full suite is pricy, but allows for pretty neat tricks like editing individual notes within a chord.

The cheaper versions are still super useful too -- I use it all the time to clean up harmony parts, and make myself sound listenable when singing demo vocals. It's also great to edit guitar parts for timing instead of relying on quantization.

Overall it's a time saver, and if you're producing singers professionally, learning it is a must in my opinion!

Fender Stratocaster

Fender Stratocaster

I never thought I could sound good playing the blues, and then I bought a Fender Strat. It has a classic sound that is hard to replicate, and is very versatile across different genres. It's one of the few guitars I consider a "must have" if you're doing a lot of recording.

GetGood Drums

GetGood Drums

GetGood Drums is a VST I use to program MIDI drums instead of always recording real drums. The samples and presets are the best I've found yet, and the dynamic responses keep things from sounding robotic.

It runs through Kontakt player, which isn't my favorite plugin, but the quality of the sounds coming out of GetGood is worth the trouble for me.
