6 Ways To Solo Over 4 "Simple" Chords
20 min Intermediate Jun 25, 2020
This lesson explores modal interchange (aka modal mixture) between Dorian and Minor, specifically with a tonal center of E.
The Chord Progression
The four chords we're working with are:
Em – G – A – C
These chords don't fit conveniently into a single mode of major. The A major chord suggests Dorian, while the C major chord suggests natural minor. Switching between scales is a valid and helpful approach to writing melodies or leads over these chords.
What You'll Learn
- Scale-blending techniques between Dorian and Minor
- Using arpeggios to outline chord tones
- Voice leading approaches for smoother solos
- How to avoid repeating the same licks over and over
